I take my kaleidoscope off the shelf,

look through the little hole at the end

of the cardboard tube;

I turn       and turn       and turn       and turn,

letting the crystals shift into strange

and beautiful patterns, letting the pieces fall

wherever they will.

About the Poet:

Jen Bryant earned a BA from Gettysburg College and an MA from Arcadia University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Gettysburg College. She has written more than 30 picture books, novels, and poetry collections, including The Fortune of Carmen Navarro (2010), winner of a Paterson Prize for Books for Young People; A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin (2013), named an ALA-ALSC Notable Children’s Book and the winner of a Robert F. Sibert Honor and the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award. The Right Word (2014), a Caldecott Honor Book and a Robert F. Sibert Medal Winner; and Six Dots: A Story of Young Louis Braille (2016), winner of a Schneider Family Book Award. Bryant’s books have also received an International Reading Association Teachers’ Choices Award, a Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Books of the Year award, and been recommended by Oprah.
